Drones begin to compete with Swiss postmen

Postal drone

Postal Service of Switzerland (Swiss Post) began testing the complex of delivery of correspondence on the basis of unmanned aerial vehicles. Drones are capable of delivering postal items weighing up to 1 kg at a distance of about 10 km. Secure shipping routes will be developed using the software of the American manufacturer of drones Matternet based on cloud technologies.

The partner of the postal service for the introduction of this technology of targeted delivery of goods, is one of the divisions of the national airline Swiss International Air Lines. The joint statement noted that it will take about five years for commercial implementation, but the first results are very encouraging. Basically, drones will be tested for a period of continuous use.

The main direction of the use of unmanned vehicles will be deliveries in the areas cut off from the outside world as a result of natural disasters, as well as delivery of medicines, laboratory tests and priority cargoes.

An attempt by the largest online retailer Amazon to introduce a similar delivery system hascome across legal restrictions on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in the United States.
